How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they perform different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 check here bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the new audi car key GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal audi a3 replacement key to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer.
